WSJ Slams Owens Amendment for Promoting Congress’ Own Interests Over the Flying Public

[WASHINGTON D.C., JULY 19, 2023] – The Wall Street Journal is slamming the misguided efforts of a Delta-backed group and several members of Congress trying to change the slot and perimeter rules at Reagan National Airport [DCA], acknowledging that more flights at DCA would mean more delays and congestion at the overburdened airport. The Journal criticizes the Owens amendment – which is pushing to add more flights to DCA — for putting the interests of members of Congress over those of the public.

Flying the Congressional Skies

The FAA authorization bill perfectly illustrates priorities on Capitol Hill.

  • “Flying these days is as enjoyable as a trip to the dentist, so it’s nice to see Members of Congress try to improve the experience . . . for themselves.”

  • “The House this week plans to vote on legislation reauthorizing the Federal Aviation Administration…[and] Congress-folk from outside the Reagan National perimeter…want to hop off a flight and scoot to work. This may be the only instance in modern memory when Members care about efficient travel.”

  • “A bipartisan group plans to offer an amendment to add seven long-distance round trips at National. ‘Every American should have the opportunity to visit their nation’s capital and witness their government in action,’ Utah Rep. Burgess Owens said. He’s right, but the FAA reauthorization is a perfect illustration of Congress in action. The Members promote their own interests and those of politically favored groups while ignoring the national interest. Maybe more delays at National would give Members of Congress more sympathy for the flying public.”

About The Coalition to Protect America’s Regional Airports

The Coalition to Protect America’s Regional Airports [CPARA] strongly believes that airport authorities – working with local communities and lawmakers – are best placed to make operational decisions at our airports, which will lead to safer, more convenient, and sustainable air travel.

Our 140+ member coalition opposes any changes to the High Density [“slot”] and perimeter rules at Reagan National Airport [DCA]. DCA is currently at capacity and at risk of being seriously overburdened should there be changes to the slot and perimeter rules. Adding more flights from DCA could create unnecessary gridlock, threaten jobs and local businesses, risk connectivity for countless communities, and increase congestion, delays, and noise.
